The Application Process
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for the McNair Scholars programs, students need to meet the following criteria:
- Be UC Berkeley undergraduate student in good standing with a GPA of 3.0 and above
- Come form a low-income household where neither parent has obtained a bachelors degree.
- and/or be a member of an underrepresented group in higher education (i.e. Native American, Pacific Islander, Chicano/Latino or African American)
- Have accumulated a minimum of 60 credits by the end of the Fall semester 2011
- Be interested in obtaining a doctoral degree from a major university in the United States
Each year, the selection committee actively seeks and selects students interested in pursuing doctoral degrees (Ph.D.) who have proven records of academic excellence and a commitment to education.
Requirements
McNair Scholars are expected to attend a mandatory seminar every Wednesday starting on the January 18 and ending in May 25. We also expect scholars to be available during the summer of 2012 to conduct their research and attend a weekly seminar. Scholars are expected to complete their research project by the end of July 2012, submit a written report to both their mentor and the McNair program by the end of July, and present their finding at the National McNair Symposium at UC Berkeley the first week of August. We also expect all students to complete a strong graduate school application by the end of the Fall semester 2012 and to apply to at least one graduate school program in the Fall semester 2012.
Deadline
The 2011 application deadline is Tuesday, October 12 at 3:00 pm. Please submit all application materials to the Academic Achievement Programs office at 2515 Channing Way, Berkeley, CA 94720-2410.
